Motocross jumps are the most exciting part of motocross yet for many, they are the #1 source of fear.
“How do I get over my fear of jumping” is by far the #1 question I am asked in my online mental skills training group.
You’re about to learn the mental skills needed to overcome your fear of hitting motocross jumps.
How to Get Over the Fear of Jumping a Dirt Bike
The risk of injury is high in motocross and with that comes a very rational sense of fear.
Let’s talk about some powerful ways to get over your fear of motocross jumps.
We will start off by teaching you about fear.
1. What causes your fear
The typical response most of us have to fear is to either run from it or freeze and do nothing.
With motocross jumps, this results in going around the jump, rolling it, or in extreme cases not even wanting to ride the track it’s on.
“You’ve got to understand that fear often serves a very important purpose.”
That purpose is to keep you safe and alive.
Fear is what inspired your ancestors from 68,876 years ago to run like hell when they heard the heavy pounding of a T-Rex’s footsteps.
This is a deep-seated response that served us very well for over 100,000 years yet in modern times is often irrational.
2. Fear is an illusion
Here’s one of my favorite ways to remind yourself that fear is an illusion.
F.E.A.R. – Future Events Appearing Real
As you read this article, someone standing with a gun to your face is considered a legitimate fear.
The fears listed below are extremely common yet they are often an illusion we imagine in our own minds.
- Fear of judgment.
- The fear of other people’s opinions.
- Fear of failure.
Here’s a fact about fear you’re gonna want to write down.
“95-99% of the fears we imagine in our minds never come true!”
Read that one again.
Your imagination is your greatest gift yet we all too often use it to create illusions of fear that paralyze us.
Start getting curious and begin questioning your fears!
Ask yourself one simple question, “Is this fear real or am I imagining it?”
Challenge these as well as any truths you’ve fall victim to believing.
3. Face your fears
The key to overcoming any fear is to face it head-on courageously!
This isn’t easy but the key to overcoming fear is courage.
When you lean into and face your fears their illusion becomes more and more apparent the closer you get to them.
4. What feeds fear
I can promise you this 5:34 video will hit you like a ton of bricks.
You’ll witness one of my favorite gurus awakening Aubrey Marcus to overcome a fear holding him back since he was 17.
Tell me that didn’t almost make you cry.
I teared up a bit, to be honest.
“What often feeds your fears is a set of limiting beliefs you created.”
These are based on a false interpretation of emotionally charged events that occurred in your life.
5. Ending fear
The key to ending fear lies in shifting your perspective of it.
View it as a lie until proven otherwise.
Find ways to dissolve the illusion, such as questioning its validity.
“If your fears are valid another way to overcome them is by accepting anticipated consequences.”
Let’s say, for example, you have fear of entering into competition.
Choose to accept that you may experience feelings of shame, guilt, and embarrassment ahead of time.
Often, the fear of these lower vibrational emotions feeds into our fears.
